Deaf Medium Secure Services

Harlow ward provides 4 beds for Deaf patients detained under the Mental Health Act who require detention in conditions of Medium Security. Patients are admitted to Harlow ward following a comprehensive Multi Disciplinary assessment. Patients are admitted from the courts, prison transfers and referrals from other services, including secure hospitals. (High/Medium/Low). Most patients will have significant forensic histories, complex needs and pose a significant risk if managed in conditions of less security at the point of referral. All patients are subject to a 12 week assessment period, which provides a detailed assessment of mental health and social needs; communication assessment; full risk management assessment; rehabilitation profile and detailed care plan for future interventions. An enhanced CPA meeting is held following the initial assessment period to discuss and plan the patient's future care.

All therapeutic interventions and treatment is delivered using British Sign Language (BSL) preferably without the use of interpreters as intermediaries. All staff delivering therapies are encouraged to be fluent BSL users. A high proportion of Deaf staff are employed to provide a positive Deaf identity and as a role model. All aspects of service delivery are undertaken within the context and understanding of Deaf culture and specific communication needs of patients, a Deaf centred approach to encourage accessibility to profoundly deaf patients. BSL interpreters are used for all MDT meetings and meetings with external professionals such as CPA's, MHRT's etc. In some instances individual assessments/sessions with patients may require the use of BSL interpreters.

A wide range of therapeutic and occupational interventions are available (Click therapies doc) appropriate to the needs of the individual patient. These interventions are delivered by trained and qualified staff experienced in working with Deaf people with mental health needs. Activities include: daily living skills; art and crafts; IT skills; access to a multi sensory room; fully equipped gymnasium and an OT kitchen. The ward and living accommodation design, build and equipment have been developed around the needs of Deaf patients. Harlow ward living and recreational area has recently been extended to provide more light and space for Deaf patients, ensuring an environment to facilitate care and communication.
